Ten years ago if someone had stated that Abu Dhabi was going to create a man-made island to host the Grand Prix, a Ferrari theme park, hotels, malls, and concerts by the likes of Snoop Dogg and Madonna, that someone would have been met with a wry smile. Yet, today, Yas Island has given us all that and more.
Abu Dhabi is made up of a series of Islands, some natural, some otherwise. Traditionally there was only one access point to the main city and that bridge was usually very busy. The Abu Dhabi government moved to correct this by adding a highway to help people access the city from the East. To do this it needed to reclaim land, and on that land ‘Yas Island’ was born.
Yas Island is an excellent example of how the UAE develops as one, despite what the UK media insinuates. Whilst Dubai makes headlines for The Palm Jumeirah and the Burj Khalifa, Abu Dhabi quietly gets to work and one day, seemingly out of nowhere, there’s a race track and a waterpark.
It is important to appreciate that Yas Island is not just about fun. Where there is attraction there must be residences, and where there are residences there must be amenities. It is difficult to accurately describe the scope of opportunity in the UAE. Work here continues at as fast a pace as it ever has.
